Occupational disability: why it matters more than you think
As of: September 2026 · Erhan Özcan
Short answer
Anyone born after 1961 has no statutory occupational disability protection, only a claim to the reduced earning capacity pension – and that is usually not enough.
No statutory occupational disability pension
For everyone born after 1961, only the reduced earning capacity pension remains. It only applies once you can barely work in any occupation at all.
The reduced earning capacity pension is rarely enough
The benefit is usually well below your previous income. But ongoing costs such as rent or loan repayments remain.
Common causes
The most common reasons are mental illness and back problems – not accidents. So it can affect anyone, even in an office job.
